Interview with Sarah
If you’ve ever wandered past the courts and felt the buzz — fast-paced rallies, flying dives, and a lot of laughter — you’ve probably caught a glimpse of beach tennis in action. Today, we’re chatting with Sarah from the club to hear their stories, what drew them into the sport, and what keeps them returning to the sand week after week.

1. What do you enjoy most about playing beach tennis?
Seeing familiar and friendly faces each weekend, I’ve really come to appreciate the community of people we’ve built down at East Coast and find myself looking forward to our next meet.
2. What’s the toughest part of the game for you?
We have quite a range of skill levels across our players, so some games can get quite challenging for me. In attempt to bridge these gaps we do have coaches who stop by on their holiday route to conduct some workshops for us which I think are immensely beneficial (and fun)!
3. How has beach tennis changed your routine?
I find that it became quite a turning point in my fitness. I loved how I felt after a session and as a result was gradually seeking out a healthier lifestyle overall. While I may still fall off course sometimes, it’s the perfect kind of low stakes regular group that helps me get back on track.
4. What’s your favorite part of the game?
Definitely a celebratory shimmy after a brilliant point earned. I also love watching the games. Some days I don’t have much energy to play I’ll still show up for a game then spend most of the time watching the match ups. Some games are pretty intense, and we also have a few characters who are hilarious to watch.
5. Any advice for first-timers?
Please introduce yourself! Everyone would love to get to know you, and I’m sure you’ll strike up plenty of conversations in the downtime between your matches. We do have social outings after beach tennis or on alternative dates (dinners, drinks) and sometimes even concurrently (potluck picnics, birthdays). I’m certain there is something for everyone. 🙂
6. If you had to explain beach tennis in one sentence…?
Failing upwards together. Super cheesy but we’re all learning and often times it’s quite a spectacular spectacle. You’ll find us covered in sand from diving and falling to reach balls after receiving challenging shots. It’s truly all fun and games and makes each session feel so incredibly rewarding when we get to share a few laughs and celebrations together, whether teammates or opponents.
Why We Love This
Beach tennis shows that fitness and fun can go hand in hand. It’s social, exciting, and offers a full-body workout without feeling like a chore. Beach tennis isn’t just a sport for this group — it’s a community built on encouragement, shared laughter, and showing up for one another, whether on or off the sand. From friendly weekend meet-ups to spontaneous picnics and post-game dinners, the joy comes as much from the people as from the play itself. So if you're thinking of giving it a try, don’t be shy — say hello, join a game, and discover how much fun “failing upwards together” can be.
