Singapore Beach Tennis Club

Interview with Kasun

If you’ve ever walked past a beach court and seen players flying around in the sand, smashing balls, and laughing in between points — you’ve probably spotted a beach tennis game in action. We caught up with Kasun, a recreational player who’s fallen in love with the sport, to hear about their journey and what makes beach tennis so addictive.

1. How did you first get into beach tennis, and when was it?

I first played beach tennis in 2022 June. Friend invited me along to “just try it.” I thought I’d be terrible, but after a couple of rallies, I couldn’t stop. Been hooked since.

2. What do you enjoy most about playing beach tennis?

The beach. I love the sand, the breeze and the sun. Also vibes. You can be competitive, but it’s also super social. Everyone’s laughing, cheering, and sweating together.

3. If you could improve one thing about your beach tennis game, what would it be?

My service. A good serve requires strength, technique, timing, and focus. While getting the ball over the net can be easy, doing an ace is not.

4. What’s the toughest part of the game for you?

The sand. It’s sneaky! You think you’re quick until you try sprinting in beach. It’s a workout on its own.

5. How has beach tennis changed your routine?

Totally. My whole saturday now is a one big BT session. I wake up in the morning. Go to beach. Play the whole day. At the end of the day I only have just enough energy to get into bed. I’ve made new friends, gotten fitter, and my tan is next-level.

6. Got a favorite move?

Yup I like doing a lob followed by a drop. Sure way to get a point.

7. Any advice for first-timers?

Don’t stress about technique. Just play. You can pick up the rules as you go, and everyone’s super welcoming. Everybody starts at 0.

8. Do you play for fun, fitness, or competition?

All three! The fitness comes naturally, the competition keeps it spicy, and it's all fun.

9. If you had to explain beach tennis in one sentence…?

It’s the happiest sport you’ll ever play.

Why We Love This

Beach tennis is proof that sport doesn’t always have to feel serious to be rewarding. It’s fun, it’s social, and you get a killer workout while playing in the sun. If you’ve never tried it, take Kasun's advice — just jump in. You might walk off the sand with a new obsession.
